Save From Water and Energy

Why Saving?

The need for water and energy in the world increases in direct proportion with the increasing population and the number of enterprises each other day. However, energy resources are decreasing and the costs are increasing accordingly. While many businesses are focusing on renewable energy sources, they are also working to improve processes in order to save energy and reduce carbon footprint.

Turkey, being a rapidly developing country and owning a growing population, energy consumption increases with a speed. In Turkey, 40% of energy consumption is made in the industrial plants and operations. Since the energy demand of Turkey is expected to increase even more in the coming years, it is necessary to save energy and water efficiently by using limited energy and water resources both today and in the future.

The Enemy Of Saving

One of the most important methods of increasing energy efficiency in the current conditions of the enterprises is the correct conditioning of the water used in the processes. One of the biggest enemies of energy savings is high levels of lime in the water. Chemical consumption and energy consumption increase at the points where water with high level of lime is used in the processes. Because, in the course of time, the lime layer deposited on the surfaces where heat transfers, such as resistors, heat exchangers, boilers and cooling towers, acts as insulation and prevents heat transfer. Depending on this, more energy is used to heat up or cool down the desired fluid (liquid or air) or the surface to the desired temperature.

For example, in professional kitchens where high hardness and lime ratio water is used, the resistance of dishwashers is covered with lime in a short time, and therefore machines spend more energy to heat up the water. A similar situation is observed in professional laundries. As a matter of fact, the use of hard water in steam boiler systems or washing machine resistors used for heating the water in these enterprises causes heat losses in a similar fashion. The use of hard water during washing also increases the detergent consumption.

The use of calcined water in indoor and outdoor cooling systems in industry and in many professional enterprises creates undesired insulation effect and therefore, causes energy losses. However, the biofilm layer, which may occur due to microorganism activities in open refrigeration circuits, also prevents heat transfer by acting similarly to the deposition of lime.

The approximate effect of the thickness of the lime layer (mm) on energy consumption is quite high as can be seen from the data in the table below.

Deposit thickness (mm) Energy loss (%)
1,23 8,50%
1,57 9,30%
1,97 11,10%
2,46 12,40%
4,92 25,00%
9,84 40,00%
14,76 55,00%
19,69 70,00%

In other words, approximately 1 cm thick scab layer causes 40% more energy consumption in enterprises and therefore increases operating costs.

The lime deposit formed on the heat transfer surfaces not only prevents heat transfer. These deposits can also lead to “in deposit corrosion”, which leads to the erosion and perforation of the metal lines in which the process water circulates. As a result of this, heat, energy and water losses of enterprises increase and the systems are going to stop for renovation and consequently labor losses can be experienced.

For A Sustainable Future And Less Carbon Footprint

By pre-treatment and proper conditioning of the water used in the enterprises, it is possible to prevent the formation of heat and heat transfer such as lime and biofilm layer. However, in order to prevent further energy losses, lime must be cleaned on lines and machines. Sustainable resources and methods should be used to ensure efficient use of resources and energy, and to operate facilities at lower costs.
